Trump Says Denmark Has Failed to Address ‘Russian Threat’ in Greenland, Repeats Push for U.S. Ownership

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday claimed Denmark has been unable to deal with what he called the “Russian threat” around Greenland, saying it was now time for action. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that NATO had been warning Denmark for the past 20 years to counter Russian influence near Greenland, adding, “Now it is time, and it will be done!!!”

The White House and Denmark’s foreign affairs ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump has repeatedly stated he wants the United States to take ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark, framing it as a national security priority due to the increasing presence of Russia and China in the Arctic region.

However, leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea, saying Greenland is not for sale and does not want to become part of the United States. Trump also vowed on Saturday to impose escalating tariffs on European allies until the U.S. is allowed to buy Greenland, despite European officials pointing out that Greenland is already covered under NATO’s collective security framework.
