Trump Seeks $6.2 Million Reimbursement After Georgia Election Case Dismissed

U.S. President Donald Trump has asked a Georgia state court to order prosecutors to reimburse him more than $6.2 million in legal fees, claiming the amount was spent defending against criminal charges related to alleged interference in the 2020 presidential election he lost to Joe Biden. The request was filed after prosecutors dropped the case in November from the Superior Court of Fulton County, following the disqualification of the district attorney.

Trump’s legal team argued that he is entitled to reimbursement under a Georgia law enacted in May last year, which mandates courts to award reasonable attorney fees when charges are dismissed after a prosecuting attorney is removed for improper conduct. In a statement, Trump lawyer Steve Sadow said the former president was seeking fees incurred while defending what he called a “politically motivated” case brought by disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Willis had charged Trump and 18 co-defendants with participating in a broad criminal conspiracy to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results, following the release of a recording in which Trump asked a state election official to “find” enough votes to secure a win. An appeals court removed Willis from the case in 2024, citing an “appearance of impropriety” due to her romantic relationship with a special prosecutor she appointed. At least two other defendants, including former Trump lawyers John Eastman and Robert Cheeley, have also sought reimbursement of their legal costs.
