Trump Signs Executive Order to End Federal Support for Transgender Youth Healthcare

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued an executive order ending all federal funding and support for transgender healthcare for minors, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The directive fulfills a campaign pledge to combat what Trump referred to as “child sexual mutilation.” Legal challenges are expected as opponents argue the order infringes on healthcare rights.

Supporters, including the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom, praised the move as a step toward “sanity,” while critics, such as Dr. Marci Bowers, a transgender care specialist, condemned it as dangerous, claiming it would exacerbate mental health issues for transgender youth. Major medical associations have previously found these treatments to be life-saving for young people at risk of suicide.

The executive order directs the health and human services secretary to review best practices for transgender care and limit federal health program payments for such treatments. Civil rights groups, including the ACLU and Lambda Legal, vowed to challenge the order in court, asserting that it would cause unnecessary suffering for vulnerable children and their families.
