Trump Threatens 200% Tariffs on French Wine to Pressure Macron Over ‘Board of Peace’

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wines and champagnes, in what appeared to be an attempt to pressure French President Emmanuel Macron into joining his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative aimed at resolving major global conflicts. According to the report, the plan would begin with Gaza and later expand to other flashpoints, while raising broader questions about the role of the United Nations. A source close to Macron said the French leader intends to decline the invitation.

Trump dismissed Macron’s reported stance and said he could use trade pressure to compel participation, adding a personal jab at the French president’s political future. The tariff threat comes amid heightened trade tensions between Washington and the European Union, where EU wines and spirits already face a 15% U.S. tariff. The United States remains the largest market for French wine and spirits, with exports valued at 3.8 billion euros in 2024, making any escalation a serious risk for producers and exporters.

French officials condemned the remarks, with a Macron aide describing tariff threats aimed at influencing foreign policy as unacceptable. French Farm Minister Annie Genevard called the tactics “brutal” and “blackmail,” urging Europe to respond firmly, including possible retaliation measures. The threat has also unsettled markets, with shares in luxury giant LVMH—owner of leading champagne brands such as Moët & Chandon—falling in early trading, while analysts warned uncertainty could discourage investment across the European beverages industry.
