Trump to Award Presidential Medal of Freedom to Rudy Giuliani After Car Crash

Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, just days after Giuliani was hospitalized following a car crash in New Hampshire. Calling him “the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot,” Trump said details of the ceremony would be revealed later. The medal is the nation’s highest civilian honor, traditionally given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the United States or global peace.

Giuliani, who served as New York City mayor from 1994 to 2001, earned the nickname “America’s Mayor” for his leadership during the September 11 attacks. In later years, he became one of Trump’s most prominent allies, supporting efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. His reputation, however, has faced setbacks, including a defamation case in which he admitted making false claims against Georgia election workers, and a civil contempt ruling for failing to disclose information about his assets.

The 80-year-old politician was injured on Saturday when a rental car carrying him was struck from behind at high speed. His spokesperson, Michael Ragusa, said Giuliani suffered a fractured vertebra along with cuts, but is in “good spirits and recovering tremendously.” Ragusa emphasized that the crash was accidental and “not a targeted attack.”
