Trump Warns UK Over China Ties as Starmer Pushes Economic Reset with Beijing

U.S. President Donald Trump cautioned that Britain’s growing engagement with China was “very dangerous,” as Prime Minister Keir Starmer promoted the economic gains of renewed UK–China cooperation during his visit to Beijing. Speaking in Washington, Trump did not elaborate on his remark but has recently taken a tougher line on countries strengthening trade links with China. His comments came as Starmer held extensive talks with President Xi Jinping, calling for a “more sophisticated relationship” focused on better market access, reduced tariffs and fresh investment opportunities.

Starmer highlighted progress made during his meetings, describing discussions with Xi as “very warm” and productive. Addressing the UK–China Business Forum in Beijing, he welcomed agreements including visa-free travel measures and lower tariffs on British whisky, calling them symbolic of broader efforts to rebuild mutual trust. The British leader also met major Chinese business figures, including the head of automaker Chery, which plans to establish a research and development centre for commercial vehicles in Liverpool, according to local officials.

Despite U.S. unease, Starmer insisted Britain would not be forced to choose between Washington and Beijing, emphasizing the UK’s deep defence, intelligence and trade ties with the United States. His visit comes as several Western leaders seek to stabilize economic relations with China amid global trade uncertainty and shifting U.S. foreign policy signals. While Trump is planning his own trip to China later this year, members of his administration have expressed doubt that Britain will gain significant export advantages in the competitive Chinese market.
