During a recent visit to Australia, former Fox News anchor and current right-wing advocate Tucker Carlson had a heated exchange with Sydney Morning Herald political correspondent Paul Sakkal. The confrontation began when Sakkal referred to Carlson as a “useful idiot” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, prompting Carlson to launch into a defensive and sarcastic tirade. The discussion quickly escalated as Carlson mocked COVID-19 vaccines and accused Sakkal of being out of touch with reality, while the journalist attempted to steer the conversation back to Carlson’s views on Putin.
Sakkal’s question focused on whether Carlson felt any regret for his perceived support of Putin, given the widespread condemnation of the Russian leader among mainstream conservatives. Carlson responded by attacking former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and blaming Western powers, including the Biden administration, for prolonging the conflict in Ukraine. He criticized Johnson for allegedly shutting down peace negotiations and claimed that Ukraine’s future would be dominated by foreign corporations as a result of the war.
Carlson’s followers praised his combative response on social media, celebrating his remarks as a strong rebuke of “woke journalism.” However, critics, including the group Republicans Against Trump, labeled him a “Russian asset,” highlighting the polarized reactions to his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and his handling of the interview with Sakkal.
