An active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force is in critical condition following a self-immolation incident outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. According to officials, the man set himself on fire around 1 p.m. ET, prompting a response from both the U.S. Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department. The embassy stated that no staff members were injured during the incident.
Authorities investigated a “suspicious vehicle” believed to be connected to the individual, which was later cleared. Before the act, the man, who live-streamed the event on Twitch, declared he would no longer be complicit in what he termed as genocide, expressing his protest by repeatedly yelling “free Palestine” after setting himself ablaze. The Air Force confirmed an active duty airman was involved but has not released his identity.
This marks the second instance of self-immolation outside an Israeli facility in the U.S. since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The incident occurs amid escalating tensions and international debate over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, with global leaders and organizations scrutinizing the humanitarian implications of the ongoing conflict.
