The U.S. Intelligence community is actively investigating whether the FBI played any role in the planning of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, according to a senior intelligence official. Joseph Kent, chief of staff to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, made the disclosure during his Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday for the position of Director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center.
“We’re looking into it right now,” Kent stated in response to questions from lawmakers, marking the first time a top intelligence official has publicly acknowledged such a probe. The revelation adds a new dimension to ongoing inquiries into the events of January 6, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The investigation comes amid heightened scrutiny of law enforcement agencies and their potential roles before and during the insurrection. While no evidence has yet been presented publicly linking the FBI to the planning of the assault, Kent’s statement suggests the intelligence community is leaving no stone unturned as it seeks to ensure accountability and transparency surrounding one of the darkest days in modern American democracy.
