A U.S. judge on Monday will hear Danish energy firm Orsted’s request for a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration’s move to suspend its $5 billion Revolution Wind offshore project near Rhode Island. Orsted’s lawsuit is part of a broader legal push by offshore wind developers and states challenging the Interior Department’s December 22 decision to pause five offshore wind leases, citing national security concerns.
The Trump administration’s offshore wind stance has already disrupted several multi-billion dollar renewable energy projects, with President Donald Trump repeatedly criticising wind turbines as unattractive, expensive, and ineffective. Orsted said Revolution Wind is roughly 87% complete and remains on track to begin generating electricity later this year, making the suspension a significant setback at an advanced stage of construction.
Revolution Wind LLC is a 50-50 joint venture between Orsted and Global Infrastructure Partners’ Skyborn Renewables, and the company is also pursuing legal action on behalf of its Sunrise Wind project off the coast of New York. Monday’s hearing is the first of three injunction hearings scheduled this week, with additional cases involving Equinor’s Empire Wind near New York and Dominion’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind facility.
