The Trump administration has announced a $5 billion initiative to tackle long-standing scientific challenges using artificial intelligence across multiple fields. The program will involve 15 federal agencies, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Defense, Transportation and Interior, with AI being used to identify the causes of chronic diseases, speed up drug discovery, and develop more durable construction materials.
Scientists participating in the initiative will gain access to the Department of Energy’s supercomputers, advanced AI systems and specialized government datasets. According to White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios, the collaboration aims to combine expertise from multiple agencies and leverage the U.S. government’s vast data resources to answer complex scientific questions more efficiently.
The administration also plans to reshape federal research funding by placing greater emphasis on supporting individual scientists and AI-driven research rather than universities, giving the government more oversight over funding decisions. As part of the initiative, Microsoft will contribute $40 million in AI computing credits over the next three years to support the research effort.
