U.S. Launches Major Military Strikes on Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

The United States initiated large-scale military strikes against Iran on February 28, with President Donald Trump announcing the start of “major combat operations” targeting the country’s missile capabilities. Describing the action as a “massive and ongoing operation,” Trump said the objective is to eliminate imminent threats posed by the Iranian regime and protect American citizens. He acknowledged the risks involved, noting that U.S. forces could suffer casualties, but emphasized that the mission is intended to secure long-term safety and stability.

Simultaneously, Israeli forces carried out overnight strikes on Iranian targets, with explosions reported in the capital, Tehran. Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that the attacks were pre-emptive measures aimed at neutralizing threats to the State of Israel. The coordinated military actions mark a significant escalation in regional tensions and raise concerns about a broader conflict in the Middle East.

The strikes come after weeks of heightened strain between Washington and Tehran, as negotiations over Iran’s nuclear and missile programs faltered. Trump had repeatedly warned of military action if diplomatic efforts failed, citing concerns that Iran was advancing missile capabilities capable of threatening Europe, U.S. bases abroad, and eventually the American mainland. Indirect talks between the two nations had continued as recently as February 26 in Geneva, but the latest developments suggest diplomacy has given way to force.
