Uber Faces €825 Million GDPR Fine

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber €825 million ($966 million) for allegedly violating European data protection rules by using automated systems to suspend or deactivate drivers without providing adequate information or meaningful human review.

The penalty is the second-largest ever imposed under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, behind the €1.2 billion fine issued to Meta in 2023. The case relates to incidents involving European drivers between 2020 and 2022, including automated suspensions linked to suspected fraud and alleged permanent deactivations based on low customer ratings.

Uber strongly disputed the decision and said it would appeal, arguing that the fine is disproportionate and that its current policies provide human review and opportunities for drivers to challenge suspensions. The company said only 126 European drivers were deactivated because of low ratings in 2021, while the regulator said Uber had violated drivers’ rights against significant decisions being made solely by automated systems.
