Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has initiated legal proceedings against an artificial intelligence (AI) app for the unauthorized use of her likeness and voice in a 22-second advertisement. The ad, posted on X (formerly Twitter), was created by the image-generating app ‘Lisa AI:90’s Yearbook & Avatar’ and featured an AI-generated version of Johansson delivering a scripted message. The video, which was discovered by Johansson’s team, has since been removed from the internet.
The advertisement included a disclaimer claiming that it featured “images produced by Lisa AI” and had “nothing to do with this person.” Johansson’s representatives have confirmed that she is not affiliated with the company and has taken appropriate legal action to address the infringement. This incident is not isolated, as other celebrities like Tom Hanks and comedian Sarah Silverman have also faced similar issues of AI-generated content using their likeness without consent.
The unauthorized use of celebrities’ images and voices in AI-generated content highlights the ongoing challenges in protecting intellectual property in the digital age. Legal actions like Scarlett Johansson’s case aim to assert the rights of public figures and reinforce the boundaries of AI-generated content.
