US Congressman Faces Backlash Over Anti-Muslim Remarks

Republican U.S. Representative Randy Fine is facing sharp criticism from civil rights groups and Democratic leaders after making anti-Muslim remarks on social media. In a post on X that drew tens of millions of views, Fine wrote that “the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.” The comments quickly triggered widespread condemnation, with advocates calling them dangerous and discriminatory.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which previously labeled Fine an anti-Muslim extremist, denounced the statement and urged accountability. Prominent Democrats, including Gavin Newsom and Hakeem Jeffries, called the remarks Islamophobic and unacceptable, with some demanding his resignation. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned that ignoring such rhetoric risks normalizing hate speech in public discourse.

Fine has dismissed the backlash and reiterated his stance online. His past statements have included calls for mass expulsion of Muslims from the United States and other inflammatory comments. Rights advocates say incidents of Islamophobia have increased in recent years, citing political polarization, hardline immigration rhetoric, and tensions linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza as contributing factors.
