In a shocking development, Russian authorities have confirmed the demise of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the infamous private military group Wagner. The crashed Embraer Legacy jet, en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg, claimed the lives of all ten individuals on board, including Prigozhin and his second-in-command Dmitry Utkin. The sudden and unexplained nature of the crash has raised numerous questions, prompting the Russian Aviation Authority to launch a special commission to investigate the incident.
The tragic incident occurred when the executive jet, carrying three crew members and seven passengers, suddenly plummeted in its final moments of flight, according to flight tracking data. Ian Petchenik from Flightradar24 noted that the aircraft experienced a swift and drastic vertical descent, dropping over 8,000 feet from its cruising altitude of 28,000 feet within just 30 seconds. The crash site, located nearly 300 kilometers north of Moscow, has been sealed off by the police as investigations into the cause of the crash intensify.
Yevgeny Prigozhin’s role as the head of Wagner brought him notoriety due to the group’s involvement in various conflicts, including Ukraine. Prigozhin’s fate had been a subject of speculation after a previous mutiny, during which President Vladimir Putin labeled it as “treason.” Despite initial charges against Prigozhin, they were later dropped, allowing him to operate in the shadows. This tragedy has rekindled intrigue around his controversial persona and the circumstances of the crash, demanding a comprehensive inquiry into the events leading to the untimely demise of the Wagner chief.
