Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren has urged the Trump administration to reject efforts by major artificial intelligence companies to weaken transparency requirements in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Warren argued that regulators should have broader access to information about AI models rather than being limited to disclosures only during formal government investigations.
Warren accused major technology companies of lobbying for stronger protections that would shield AI algorithms, source code, and other critical model details from regulatory scrutiny. She warned that as AI systems become more powerful and their risks increasingly cross borders, governments need greater authority to examine how these models operate to better protect the public.
The letter comes amid growing bipartisan calls for stronger AI oversight following recent incidents involving AI systems. Industry groups representing companies such as Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon Web Services have argued that mandatory disclosure of source code and model information could threaten innovation and the global supply of AI services, while lawmakers contend that greater transparency is essential for effective regulation and public safety.
