A tragic incident occurred at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport in Thailand, where a 57-year-old Thai woman had to undergo leg amputation after it became trapped in a moving walkway. The incident took place in Terminal 2 as she was preparing to board a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Airport officials reported that a medical team was compelled to amputate her left leg above the knee. The airport director expressed condolences and assured that measures would be taken to prevent such accidents in the future. The airport will cover all medical expenses and is open to negotiating additional compensations.
Following the accident, images surfaced online showing the lower part of the woman’s leg wedged beneath the walkway’s belt while airport staff provided assistance. Notably, a nearby suitcase was missing two wheels, and some comb-like plates designed to cover the belt’s edge were broken off. The director explained that the suitcase wheels were found under the belt, although their connection to the incident remained unclear. The walkway has been temporarily closed, and a team of engineers is currently examining it to determine the cause of the accident.
Airport records reveal that the walkway, manufactured by Hitachi, was installed in 1996. However, plans are underway to replace it with a newer model in 2025. In a previous incident in 2019, a passenger’s shoe was damaged after getting caught in a moving walkway in Terminal 1. The airport promptly repaired the faulty walkway, which resumed operations within an hour.
