Democrats Urge Trump to Block Chinese Automakers from U.S. Market

More than 70 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have called on Donald Trump to maintain restrictions preventing Chinese automakers from entering the American market. Led by Representatives Debbie Dingell and Ro Khanna, the lawmakers emphasized the need to protect the domestic auto industry from what they described as a strategic competitor seeking global dominance.

The appeal follows similar concerns raised earlier this month by three Democratic senators ahead of Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The push aligns with regulations introduced in January 2025 under the Biden administration, which effectively barred Chinese passenger vehicles from being sold in the United States due to national security risks, particularly related to potential data collection from vehicle technologies.

While U.S. consumers have shown growing interest in Chinese-made vehicles, strong opposition remains across political and industry lines. The Chinese Embassy in Washington criticized the restrictions as discriminatory, urging fair market conditions. Meanwhile, the White House reiterated its commitment to national security, even as Trump previously signaled openness to Chinese firms manufacturing vehicles within the U.S. Auto industry groups and lawmakers, including Senator Bernie Moreno, continue to advocate for strict measures to prevent any form of entry by Chinese automakers.
