US Supreme Court Rejects Trump Appeal in E. Jean Carroll Case

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected Donald Trump’s request to reconsider his appeal of a $5 million civil verdict awarded to E. Jean Carroll, marking a second rebuff for the president in the case. A jury in 2023 found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll and defaming her, although it did not find him liable for rape.

Trump’s lawyers had argued that the trial was unfair and that issues surrounding presidential immunity could affect the verdict. The case stemmed from Trump’s 2022 statements calling Carroll’s allegations a “hoax” and a “con job.” Carroll had accused Trump of raping her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the 1990s, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

The Supreme Court is separately considering Trump’s appeal of an $83.3 million verdict related to his 2019 statements about Carroll. Following the court’s earlier rejection of his appeal in the $5 million case, Carroll received nearly $5.63 million from Trump, including interest. The separate $83.3 million case could still be taken up by the justices.
