CBS News Turmoil Deepens as New ‘60 Minutes’ Chief Faces Staff Backlash

The leadership transition at CBS News has intensified tensions inside the acclaimed news program 60 Minutes, with newly appointed executive Nick Bilton facing resistance from staff amid a broader management shakeup. Bilton, who recently took charge following the dismissal of his predecessor, has brought in television production consultant Kelly Funke to assist with newsroom operations and staff relations. The move comes as several high-profile correspondents and producers have either departed or been removed from the network in recent weeks.

According to Reuters, tensions reached a boiling point during Bilton’s first staff meeting, where veteran correspondent Scott Pelley reportedly challenged his appointment and criticized network leadership. Pelley was subsequently dismissed after publicly voicing concerns about the direction of the program and accusing CBS News management of undermining its editorial standards. Bilton later assured employees of the show’s continued journalistic independence and said he had attempted to engage with Pelley before his departure.

The developments are part of a wider restructuring effort following the acquisition of Paramount by Skydance Media, led by David Ellison. The changes have sparked concerns among newsroom employees about editorial independence and the future direction of CBS News. Despite the internal turmoil, 60 Minutes remains the highest-rated television news program in the United States, recording audience growth over the past season.
