China bans major chip maker Micron from key infrastructure projects

China has declared that Micron Technology, the largest US memory chip manufacturer, poses serious network security risks and has banned the company’s products from key infrastructure projects in the country.

This move marks China’s first major action against a US chip maker, escalating tensions between the two nations in the ongoing dispute over technology. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) stated that Micron’s products pose significant security risks to China’s critical information infrastructure supply chain and national security. The specific risks or products were not disclosed by the CAC.

Micron confirmed that it had received the notice and is evaluating the conclusion. The US government expressed opposition to the restrictions and pledged to collaborate with allies to address the market distortions caused by China’s actions. While analysts believe the ban will have a limited impact on Micron due to its reliance on other markets, China remains an important market for the company, accounting for approximately 10% of its annual sales.
