The Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit against U.S. President Donald Trump over a recent executive order that it claims violates federal election law by giving him excessive control over the independent Federal Election Commission (FEC). The lawsuit, filed in Washington, D.C., federal court by three national Democratic committees, marks the party’s first legal challenge against Trump during his second term. It comes amid broader concerns over his efforts to reduce government oversight and consolidate power within key regulatory agencies.
The executive order, issued on February 18, expands White House influence over independent agencies, including the FEC, the National Labor Relations Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Critics argue the move is an unprecedented power grab that could allow Trump to manipulate election-related disputes in his favor. The lawsuit contends that the order undermines the bipartisan integrity of the FEC by letting Trump dictate campaign rules and enforcement decisions. The Democratic National Committee and its congressional campaign arms argue that the order is already causing harm, citing an ongoing case involving Republican Senator Ted Cruz’s reelection campaign.
The lawsuit seeks to affirm that a federal law shielding the FEC from presidential interference is constitutional and to block Trump’s executive order. The Department of Justice has pledged to vigorously defend the president’s agenda, while the FEC has declined to comment on the litigation. This lawsuit adds to the growing legal challenges against Trump’s policies since his inauguration, as Democrats look for ways to counter his sweeping changes amid their minority status in Congress.
