At least 10 people have died as devastating wildfires continue to ravage Los Angeles, fueled by dry winds and extreme weather conditions. The Pacific Palisades blaze, which has already consumed 200 acres, is now the most destructive fire in the city’s history, damaging or destroying over 5,000 structures. Affluent neighborhoods, including Calabasas and Santa Monica, have been affected, with nearly 180,000 residents forced to evacuate, including celebrities like Mark Hamill and Mandy Moore.
Los Angeles County has lost 45 square miles to the fires, with the Eaton Fire claiming five lives and contributing to the growing toll. Emergency personnel, numbering over 7,500, are battling the flames alongside reinforcements from neighboring states. President Joe Biden has authorized federal aid, covering critical resources and first responder expenses for six months, as the damage is projected to reach $135 billion.
Erratic Santa Ana winds exceeding 70 mph initially exacerbated the infernos, and though they have since weakened, officials remain cautious. Amidst the chaos, a technical error triggered false evacuation alerts across Los Angeles County, heightening public anxiety. Sheriff Robert Luna likened the destruction to “an atomic bomb,” as recovery and containment efforts press on.
