The Justice Department is reportedly close to finalizing a settlement of approximately $100 million with victims of former sports doctor Larry Nassar, according to sources familiar with the matter. This settlement relates to claims that the FBI inadequately responded to allegations against Nassar, allowing him to continue his abuses. The report by the Justice Department’s top watchdog in July 2021 criticized the FBI’s Indianapolis field office for significant errors in handling the case.
The negotiations have not yet concluded, and the Justice Department has declined to confirm the figures reported by The Wall Street Journal. Over 100 women have sought compensation, originally demanding over $1 billion due to the FBI’s failure to intervene sooner. This follows substantial settlements from Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics with Nassar’s victims, totaling $880 million.
Nassar, who was convicted in 2017 of sexually abusing 10 of his over 265 patients, is currently serving a prison sentence of up to 175 years. This case has highlighted severe lapses in FBI operations, prompting a critical review and widespread media attention since the scandal first broke.
