Vice President Kamala Harris denounced the burning of the American flag by anti-Israel protesters during demonstrations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the nation. In a strongly worded statement posted on X, Harris described the act as “despicable” and “unpatriotic,” emphasizing that the flag symbolizes America’s highest ideals and promise. She underscored that the desecration of the flag is unacceptable.
On Wednesday, several protesters rallied in Washington ahead of Netanyahu’s address to Congress, which Harris, a Democratic presidential candidate, notably skipped. The demonstrations were marked by hate-fueled rhetoric and acts of flag desecration, drawing criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Harris, while condemning the flag burning, reiterated the right to peaceful protest but firmly stated that “antisemitism, hate, and violence” have no place in the nation.
Prominent Democrats echoed Harris’s sentiments amidst Republican attempts to portray the party as pro-Hamas. Before Harris’s statement, Donald Trump’s VP nominee JD Vance criticized her for not condemning the actions sooner. Thousands of protesters, angered by the Gaza war and the killing of Palestinians following Hamas’ attack on Israel, had gathered outside the US Capitol, burning effigies and spray-painting monuments. Harris is scheduled to meet Netanyahu later on Thursday, with President Joe Biden also planning a separate meeting with the Israeli PM.
