Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced Andrew Puzder, ex-CEO of CKE Restaurants, as his nominee for U.S. ambassador to the European Union. The announcement comes as Trump renews his stance on imposing tariffs against the EU and other countries over trade surpluses, which he criticized as unfair. Puzder previously faced scrutiny when nominated for labor secretary in Trump’s first term, ultimately withdrawing his candidacy due to insufficient Senate support.
During remarks at the White House, Trump reiterated his commitment to using tariffs as a tool to address trade imbalances. “The European Union is very, very bad to us,” Trump said, emphasizing the need for economic fairness. The former president’s stance reflects his long-standing position on rebalancing trade dynamics with global partners, including the EU, Canada, Mexico, and China.
Puzder’s nomination comes despite controversies from his past. He admitted in 2017 to employing an undocumented housekeeper and faced legal complaints related to his tenure at CKE Restaurants, which oversees fast-food brands like Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. Trump expressed confidence in Puzder’s abilities, stating, “Andy will do an excellent job representing our Nation’s interests in this important region.”
