U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that American farmers would benefit greatly from upcoming trade agreements, claiming that China would purchase “billions of dollars” worth of U.S. soybeans. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from his state visit to Beijing, Trump expressed confidence that the deals would boost the U.S. agricultural sector, though he did not provide specific details on any new soybean purchase agreements.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later stated that the United States expects China to buy “double-digit billions” worth of American agricultural products over the next three years following the visit. Greer clarified that the projected purchases would cover a broad range of farm goods and not just soybeans. The announcement comes as U.S. farmers prepare for what the Department of Agriculture predicts will be the second-largest soybean harvest in the country’s history.
China has significantly reduced its dependence on American soybeans since Trump’s first term in office. In 2025, only about 15% of China’s soybean imports came from the United States, compared to 41% in 2016, as Beijing increasingly turned to lower-cost suppliers such as Brazil. Despite the decline, Trump maintained that the renewed trade understanding would deliver major gains for U.S. farmers and strengthen agricultural exports.
