The United States has launched an investigation into the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s plans to strike Iran, following Tehran’s ballistic missile attack on October 1. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the inquiry on Sunday, noting that the documents, allegedly from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency, were shared among “Five Eyes” nations before appearing on a Telegram channel.
The documents, marked “top secret,” first surfaced on Thursday and were reported by CNN and Axios over the weekend. U.S. officials are probing whether the leak was intentional from within the intelligence community or resulted from a hack. The Israeli military and U.S. agencies, including the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the Department of Justice, have not commented further on the leak. However, officials believe the documents to be legitimate.
The Telegram channel that initially posted the documents is based in Tehran and has previously shared pro-Iran material. The leak raises concerns over potential breaches of U.S. intelligence and adds to rising tensions, as Israel weighs its response to Iran’s missile assault while facing U.S. pressure to avoid escalating the conflict regionally.
