U.S. Judge Orders Trump Administration to Arrange Return of Deported Venezuelans

A U.S. federal judge has ordered the administration of Donald Trump to urgently arrange the return of about 137 Venezuelan men who were deported to El Salvador and imprisoned there over alleged ties to criminal gangs, Bloomberg News reported on Monday. The men were deported in March and transferred to a high-security prison in the Central American nation.

The deportations were carried out under the Alien Enemies Act, a rarely used wartime statute. However, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled that the removals violated the men’s constitutional due-process rights, as they were not given a meaningful opportunity to challenge their deportation in court.

In his ruling, Judge Boasberg said the Venezuelan men are entitled to return to the United States to contest their deportations. He ordered the Trump administration to submit, within two weeks, a concrete plan outlining how it will facilitate their return from El Salvador to U.S. custody.
