OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ads to 89 Countries to Boost Revenue

OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it is expanding advertising on ChatGPT to 26 additional countries, bringing the total number of markets to 89. The move comes as the artificial intelligence company strengthens its advertising business to increase revenue ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO). In August, OpenAI revealed that its advertising business had reached an annualised revenue run rate of $1 billion.

The expansion includes 14 additional Latin American countries, such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, following earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil. Advertising is also being introduced across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, including Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on ChatGPT since the company began testing advertisements in the United States earlier this year. Advertisers in the newly added markets can access the platform through technology partners or via OpenAI’s self-service Ads Manager.

Advertisements will appear exclusively on ChatGPT’s Free and Go subscription plans, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience. The expansion follows OpenAI’s introduction of AI-powered advertising tools in September and its testing of business-sponsored AI agents with selected US advertisers. The latest move signals the company’s growing focus on monetising its popular AI platform as it explores new revenue streams and prepares for potential future growth in the competitive artificial intelligence market.
